Secure Your Phone from Malware
Would you pay a yearly fee for an app that remotely locks and wipes your phone? Webroot is betting on it. Their new mobile security app for Android promises to do this, as well as scan the apps you're downloading before they ruin your phone. This launch comes after tons of apps released on the App Market have infected smartphone users, in one case sending weird text messages to entire phonebooks of people.
The app scans malware prior to installation. It also checks URLS to block potential phishing attacks and can block texts and phone calls. Last month, over 50 malicious apps were deleted from the Android Market, so this app release comes at a smart time.
Symantec, McAffee and Lookout also offer security apps for Androids. Like theirs, Webroot's app is free but charges 14.99 per year for a premium version that remotely wipes the phone and inspects apps. We just downloaded the free version and think it's fairly useless- doesn't scan downloaded apps and just protects from fishy websites. What do you guys think? Would you pay a yearly fee for TOTAL SECURITY? Or would you prefer to just read reviews and be smart about what you're downloading to your phone? To me, the whole thing seems a bit...much.
